The AI-DLC maturity model is cumulative: five levels describing the journey from manual coding to full autonomy. Here’s what each one actually looks like day to day, and the questions we ask to find out where a given team really sits.

Initial and Assisted Stages

Level 0
Manual
No AI. Developers write, test, and deploy manually, start to finish.
Level 1
Assisted
AI suggests inline code with manual developer approval on every suggestion. This is where most enterprises are today.
Level 2
Task-Delegated
AI completes small, bounded tasks (a function, a test, a fix) with developer review before it merges.

Advanced and Gated Autonomy

Level 3
Supervised
AI executes multi-step work across multiple files, with a developer actively supervising in real time.
Level 4
Gated
AI works autonomously inside defined boundaries, but a human approval gate still has to sign off before anything ships.
Level 5
ASD: Autonomous Software Development
A developer states intent. Verified, production-ready software comes out the other end, with no manual human review or approval in the loop.

The shift that matters most between Level 2 and Level 5 isn’t how much code AI writes, it’s where humans spend their attention. Humans govern systems, policies, and guardrails instead of approving individual releases one at a time.

Where Enterprises Actually Stand

Most enterprises land at Level 1 to 2, and the profile is usually uneven: strong in coding assistance, with little to none in verification, release, or governance. Naming that gap plainly is what opens the real discovery conversation.

Three questions surface it fast:

“If we mapped your teams against these five levels today, where would you land, and would it be the same answer for every team?”
“Where is AI adoption happening today: individual developers experimenting, or is it wired into your actual delivery pipeline with verification and governance?”
“What would have to be true for your organization to trust an AI agent to ship code with no human in the loop, and what’s stopping that today?”
